Melodies and dynamic range in standard tuning

November 4, 2009 by jacques stotzem

Hello,

I am Jacques Stotzem from Belgium and I am very pleased to participate to fingerpicking.net.

Two words are important to tell you about my playing : Melodies and dynamic.

Since I learned the fingerstyle guitar through the acoustic blues, I have been working on the control of the dynamic range, because it brings life to a guitar piece. During concerts, I love to perform a wide repertoire from romantic pieces to energic acoustic rock pieces. It’s interesting to notice that even very soft pieces must be played with a strong dynamic control. The plastic fingerpicks I use are very helpful to get a strong and clean sound.

What I also love in the music is the melody. To try to create melodies on the guitar that can be sung has always been a challenge to me. Knowledge of harmony is important to understand how a melodic composition can be developed, that’s one of the reasons why since a long time, I just use the standard tuning on the guitar, to get the knowledge of chords, scales, harmonisation of scales, etc… It’s a personal choice, but the only way for me to be able to manage all those informations was to play in standard tuning.

Please feel free to visit my website www.stotzem.com or my Youtube channel www.youtube.com/JStotzem . I will try to find some time in the future to post articles.

All the best,
Jacques

"What he plays is pure music. As an instrument he uses the guitar, which he knows very, very well."
